Hola Amigos

Hey friends! Welcome to another Megventure!  The countdown has officially begun for Madrid. Less than 12 hours until I plant my feet firmly on Spanish ground and begin my next world adventure. It is still incredibly surreal that I’ll be living in a foreign country for the next FIVE MONTHS – I’m sure when the jet lag catches up to me is when everything will hit me. Living abroad is nothing new to me, but exploring, adventuring, and forging a path on my own is incredibly fresh and novel to me – it makes me tremble in my boots (but just a little bit). The fact that I won’t be able to communicate fluently and that stores won’t be open 24/7 will provide just enough culture shock to settle me down.

I’m currently sitting in the Dallas-Fort Worth American Terminal nibbling on a banana, charging my iPhone (not that it’ll be of much use in Spain), jamming out to some music Phebe picked out for me, and typing my life away. This morning was an early one beginning at 0430 when American Airlines called to confirm my flight. Less than an hour later I was awoken by Bandit and Bear for the last time this break and made my way downstairs with my bags. I think everybody would be surprised to hear that I fit ALL of my clothes into a single suitcase and the rest of my shoes and toiletries into my NYU duffle. YES. You heard right, ONE SUITCASE. Let’s not recall the numerous times I have overpacked, but I think I deserve a crown or something for that. Unfortunately my reign as Packing Princess did not last long because as soon as I checked my bags I was told a) my suitcase was 4 pounds over and b) I did not have two free bags. Thankfully enough my bright eyed smile came to the rescue and the woman felt bad and upgraded my seat on my flight to Madrid (though I did have to pay for my bags).

No Idea How I Fit It All In There

No Idea How I Fit It All In There

After getting through security with a quick pat-down of my hair “because it’s beautifully poofy” (yes, the TSA agent really did say that), I made my way to my gate and promptly was asked by a soccer Mom if I really did play soccer (as if the soccer jacket and lovely thunder thighs didn’t give it away). We talked soccer for a long time, which always puts me in a good mood, then I boarded the plane where I sat next to a huge Everton fan. It was a quick two hour jaunt over to Dallas, where I quickly made my way to the Admirals Club. As soon as I sat down, a replay of a Liga game was on at the bar and two Barça fans were smoothly speaking Spanish – discussing Messi’s recent Balon D’Oro win (Go Barça!).

There’s really something about the beautiful game that makes it so unique – it transcends age, gender, race, everything. I can be anywhere in the world, and fútbol never ceases to find me. I am truly a lucky individual to not only be a student of the game as a player, but a fan, and hopefully a teacher of the game. To my amazement and incredibly disappointment I have heard from numerous sources that women’s soccer is not a commonality in Spain. I’m going to take this as my opportunity to make an impact and hopefully spread soccer to the female population because it has had such a definite and huge impact on my life.

Missing Them Already

Missing Them Already

I’m getting ready to eat some almuerzo (lunch) so I’ll finish here.

If anybody is in Spain or Europe for that matter, please do not hesitate to contact me – I’d love to meet up.

Hasta Luego

Thankful

Happy belated Turkey Day! I hope everybody had a marvelous time with all of their friends and family – and for those who were serving overseas – I owe you a great thanks. With the Thanksgiving holiday behind us, I decided it would be best to write about everything in my life that I’m thankful for.  The list is numerous so I’m just going to touch upon my top three 🙂

1. Family  – It’s a given, but I know I wouldn’t be here today without all of their help. I am so lucky to not only have my Patten/Sachen family but also the Staab family who has taken me in the past couple of years. Not only have Pete and Nani included me in their lives but have introduced me to their extended family who take me in over the holidays. I am eternally blessed to be their “second daughter” and “sister from another mister” (as Sam likes to call it).

Pattens and Staabs (minus Petey and Pete)

Pattens and Staabs (minus Petey and Pete)

2. Soccer – The sport has not only provided me with numerous opportunities, a circle of life long friends  (shout out to all current and former teammates) whom I can call upon for anything and everything, but it also has provided me an outlet for anger, creativity, and frustration. My all time favorite passion keeps me sane despite sometimes being the root of my insanity (if that makes any sense).

What's Your Excuse?

What’s Your Excuse?

3. Freedom and Opportunity – Maybe it’s the little patriot in me or even my military background, but I am and will be forever thankful for all the freedom and opportunity I have been afforded. Myself, and so many others would not be able to do the things we love without the dedication and service of current and past armed forces (huge shut out to our Military). I know that I for one wouldn’t be in NYC or NYU without my parent’s help and I wouldn’t be able to freely write and express my opinion if it weren’t for the protectors of our freedom – so Amen to that!

Hope everybody had a safe and yummy Thanksgiving! Check out this video of some NYU athletes thanking our parents for everything!

This Might Be a New Record

Yikes! It feels like I’ve set a new record in terms of not writing in forever. My life has been a blur to say the least. My days seem to flow together with no real definite end or beginning to the day, to the point where I couldn’t even tell you what the date is. November has passed by in the blink of an eye and I cannot believe Thanksgiving is in a mere three days. The past few weeks have consisted of early wake ups, late nights, and enough work to make the inner-nerd in me cringe (and to think that I’m busy in-season).  I realized after looking at my blog that I a) Can cross something off my 20 list and b)  I never fully went into details about the Emory game so I feel it’s appropriate to blog about that today.

WE BEAT EMORY <—- That needed to be in all caps because that’s how I would tell you – I would be in your face and screaming it from the top of my lungs. Just going back and thinking about that moment makes me smile.

Going into the Emory game, our team knew we had our work cut out for us. The previous weekend in Chicago and St. Louis was rough on all of us to say the least. On the following Tuesday we lost  2-0 to Mt. St. Mary in a game we should have won, and then on Friday morning we tied Carnegie Mellon in a 0-0 draw that was extremely physical. I came back to recovery Saturday morning needing some TLC and a lot of ice after punching a ball out of the box (and taking out a forward) in the final seconds of overtime. The game Sunday just seemed to be a mounting situation, an almost impossible task.

So Much More Than Friends

So Much More Than Friends

Each of us knew that in order to even be consider for the NCAA selection bid we needed to beat Emory. It was one final push that could make or break us and to be honest I didn’t know how much “fight” we had left in us. For those who don’t follow NYU Women’s Soccer, Emory is always our big game of the year. Last year we lost to them 3-2 in over time and we have never beat them in our program’s history (they were 18-0 against NYU). Prior to our game, Emory was undefeated in both the regular season and in the UAA league for TWO YEARS. They had the longest active winning streak in all of Division III and were (at the time of our game) ranked number one in the country.

The night before Emory, my Dad flew into the city from Paris on the way home from a business trip. I was beyond excited for him to be in New York and to catch the biggest game of the year. After grabbing a quick bite to eat with him on Saturday night, I found my place between the covers and tried my hardest to get a good nights sleep. Though I got a solid amount of sleep, I unfortunately slept through two alarms, rushed out of my room, bee-lining straight towards Coles. As soon as I got there, I tried to grab my jerseys  but much to my dismay the Equipment Room had lost temporarily misplaced them so I headed down to the Trainers to get all taped up and cleared to play. After changing into some warm sweats, I grabbed a banana (yum) and gatorade, then hopped on the bus.IMG_5297

The air was much more brisk and the sky had settled into a grayish haze over Gaelic Park by the time warm-ups began. The sound of Lion King echoing throughout the stadium indicated it was time to get moving. The battle was about to begin. I had an “okay” warm-up which is usually pretty indicative of how I usually play in the game, which made me very nervous going up against the top ranked Emory. Without going into much detail, we played two very tight, scoreless halves and entered into overtime confident we could come out with the W. Our team kept composed, and unlike our opponents we didn’t panic because deep down we knew that we were going to win. That’s what separated us from Emory.

The first overtime began and ended quickly and the second period was well on it’s way to being over when Erin Ahmed slotted a ball into the back of the net. It was unreal. I think I went into shock and her goal didn’t really register into my head until much much later (during the blackout as a matter of fact). I ran past girls who had fallen to the ground, embarrassed by their loss to us – a dark horse in the UAA and jumped onto my teammates. Hugs were endless and I think I may have lost my voice in the celebration. Like I discussed in the previous post, we were told during our cool down that class was canceled the following day because of the impending hurricane but we didn’t care. It was just a perfect ending to one of the most grueling weeks of the season.

Couldn't Have Asked For a Better Weekend

Couldn’t Have Asked For a Better Weekend

So going back to my list, I’m crossing off #13: Break a Record. Though I didn’t individually break any of these records, our team broke one of the longest records in NYU history and I’m so proud to be a part of it. The more I move down my list and the more I set and reset goals for myself, the more I realize that it’s less about the individual accomplishments and more about the team. The team is the ultimate champion and we proved that that weekend.

We beat and shutout Emory. I’ll never get sick of saying that.

‘Twas the night before my sophomore year

‘Twas the night before  NYU, and all through the college,

Not a person was sleeping, ‘cuz they had no parents to acknowledge.

Most were quite tired, but no one went to bed,

For visions of clubbing and Electric Zoo were still in their head.

In my room, I was cooking and digesting,

While my poor tired legs yearned to be resting.

‘Twas the night before my second year, and all through the hall,

Not a kid was found excited for the academic fall.

For New York is a city, too diverse to describe,

And the city is a place that gives off a pretty cool vibe.

Yep – that is/was my only attempt at publishing poetry. Take it for what it is but you can probably tell I’m really excited for school since I only have one class, which is pretty nice.

Anyways back to business… Besides the Yankees (76-58) falling deeper into a slump and the Padres (62-73) recovering from their less than impressive first half of the season, the past couple of days have been pretty normal. My days have lulled away with soccer, reuniting with old pals and taking naps without fear of sleeping through class. Our team has transitioned from the two sessions a day to just one and have already competed in one game against Stevens. Although we lost, it was a very useful game because it really helps us analyze what we did wrong and what we can work on as a group and as individuals.

It’s 11:30 I have to catch the subway to class early tomorrow (hello 8AMs on 42nd St! Say What?) so I’m off to bed!

Until next time! And Happy first day of school everybody 🙂

Meg and Yoga: A Deadly Mix

Hello everybody – I know it’s been awhile since I’ve last posted but I’ve been busy with my internship and workouts. Regardless, I thought I should update everybody on my newest endeavor: YOGA.

When I used to think of yoga, the first things that came to my mind were breathing exercises, stretching, and soothing sounds. After my first couple of yoga classes, the things that now come to mind are headstands, the splits, and drops of sweat rolling past my brow into my eyes.  It’s an experience entirely foreign to me, and quite frankly, I didn’t expect to be that hard. Turns out I was a tad wrong.

Being the incredibly inflexible soccer player that I am, I took up yoga to increase my flexibility and to improve my focusing and breathing skills because I thought it’d help in goal. As I walked into the Core Power Yoga Studio in Pacific Beach for Intro to Heated Yoga 1.5, I had my chin up, confident in my abilities as an athlete. I completely blew off the fact that the studio recommended that I take a few yoga classes before because I was a soccer player, and thoughts soccer players could do anything.  My sanguine self thought too highly of itself and I ended up walking out of that class more sore than I had bargained for. Maybe it’s the athlete or even just the competitive side of me, that totally disregarded the fact that yoga is an athletic activity and requires some sort of athleticism and coordination – and everybody should know that I am the most uncoordinated girl around. I love a workout that makes you sweat and all of my previous yoga experience had turned me off because they were slow and comprised of me mostly laying on a mat counting my breaths, “ohmming” to myself, and closing my eyes – it put me to sleep faster than you can say “downward dog”.

The point is, I used to think that yoga was a sport activity for sissies because I had seen videos like this,  but now I have the utmost respect because yoga is hard, like really, really, really hard. Hopefully next time you see me I’ll be able to do this, but until then, namaste.yoga thing

Sisterly Love

Maybe three posts in a single day is too much, but I’d rather write than pack. So for today, I am the Packing Procrastination Princess 🙂

In less than 24 hours I will be in Indianapolis, Indiana for the start of the NCAA Career in Sports Forum. It is essentially a conference about college athletics, coaching, and administration with a couple hundred other NCAA student-athletes chosen to represent their school. NYU was extremely lucky and had 4 student-athletes chosen, and I believe we’re one of the schools with the most participants. Because there are not many flights that arrive before 11AM in Indianapolis from San Diego, I have to leave a day early, which means I have to start packing in about 15 minutes.

Anyways, today’s post is about my younger sister, Twist. She’s a spunky, soccer-loving, super athletic, sixteen year old sophomore who’s dreams are to go to University of Oregon (Go Ducks?!). Even though we may not get along, she’s my sister, and I support her because I love her and she will be famous one day, hopefully on an international soccer platform. Here are few facts and cool pictures about my soccer fanatic sister.

  1. Her real name is not Twist, rather Melissa Ann Patten. She probably will kill me for putting that on the world wide web, oh well! She got her name when she first started walking, and you could follow her path of destruction, just like a Twister.

  3. She is a health-nut through and through. I cannot even sneak a sip of gatorade without her telling me that I probably need to run another 30 minutes to burn it all off.

  4. She is a wonder twin with her best friend Sam Staab who is practically a part of the Patten family. When they came and visited me at school, they pretended they were twins and everybody bought it.

  5. She can recite every women’s national team and national pool player and their college.  She loves the beautiful game, what can I say? Plus she is now Rachel Buehler’s training partner when she comes into town – how cool is that?

Sunday Night Thoughts: Nineteen Going on Never

I had to go “grown up” shopping today and have come to the conclusion that I detest growing up. This week I’ll be flying to Indianapolis, IN for the NCAA Career in Sports Forum, which will be incredibly exciting, but uncomfortable. I’m an athlete through and through and anytime that I’m out of my signature shorts and t-shirt look, I’m quite discombobulated. I was informed that I’d have to wear business attire this week, and seeing as I had ZERO. ZIP. ZILCH. clothes that fit that category, I did as any other girl would do and went shopping, of course! Never have I felt more uncomfortable in my life than I have in pants and a matching jacket. I think I’d rather wear cleats that were two sizes too small than wear that uncomfortable combo. I looked incredibly awkward with my soccer thighs and water polo shoulders, so I opted for some cute dress and skirt outfits that didn’t highlight the gigantic muscles that I prize so much. Although I thought I looked somewhat better in dresses than pants, my sister very nicely informed that I look like a grandma in my new digs – exactly the look I was going for! Going into the working world will be a rough transition for me, I’m hoping employers will value comfort over fashion just like I do.

Dressing for the part

Dressing for the part

Don't know if this is the look for me

Don’t know if this is the look for me

Although there are a ton of perks that come along with aging (namely being freedom), getting older quite simply stinks. It seems like yesterday when I was in middle school, wishing that I could tap my cleats together three times and I’d magically be in the adult world – I was thirteen going on thirty. Now I’m nineteen going on never.

Quote of the Week

For those who know me well, or even stepped foot in my room, know that I’m one of those people that absolutely love love love inspirational and motivational quotes. My mirror is adorned by 25 multi-colored post-it notes with quotes, sayings, and words of wisdom. They remind me to be better, stronger and smarter.

This week’s quote by Mia Hamm (A Worldwide Soccer Legend) is important to me because I have to report to school is in less than three and a half months. The countdown has begun and my teammates and I have started to prepare for next season. Similar to most other college-athletes, we were given a Summer Packet to aid in our training for the Fall. Although I’m not cleared to run yet, it’s been critical for me to do my PT exercises and bike to increase my cardio. Today, however, was an awesome day in the recovery process since my “3000 mile knee tune up”. First, the bottom-most incision has had a hole that hasn’t closed, and we figured it was just a stitch which was being stubborn – today it finally came out so I’ll be able to jump in the pool in a few days! Second, I was cleared to squat which means I can start dancing on tables again (just kidding!). But really, today has been awesome and I know that before I know it I’ll be able to run and play again 🙂

In the meantime, here’s the quote of the week, hope your inspired as I am!

“I’ve worked too hard and too long to let anything stand in the way of my goals. I will not let my teammates down and I will not let myself down.” – Mia Hamm

Meg’s Favorite Things About Summer: San Diego

Summer is my absolute favorite season. I mean, who doesn’t love summer? It’s perfect in almost every way possible, but maybe that’s because I live in one of the best places to enjoy it. No School, Soccer everyday, great weather, waves crashing on the beach, cruising down the 101, enjoying a breakfast burrito, tan lines, hanging with friends, going on the boat, and simply living life up. It’s the perfect mix of ingredients for the best time. Here’s my list of top five things to do with friends during a summer in San Diego.

  1. Coronado – Also known as Crown Town, this place is the crown jewel in my heart and I spend a ton of my free time here. In between riding bikes around the island, 4th of July, and the #1 beach in the country, Coronado is the place to be. IMG_3317IMG_3205
    Cruisin Around
  2. Indulge yourself in some Mexican food – Aside from being my all-time favorite, Mexican food is bomb here in San Diego. My top picks include: MiguelsChili PeppersTio LeosDon Panchos and Rubios (Hello Fish Taco’s). If you ever plan on visiting me, plan on going to these places as well.
    California Burrito
    Famous Fish Tacos
Miguels and Their White Sauce - Nuff Said

  3. Go to the beach – Whether it’s Coronado or La Jolla or even Del Mar, San Diego has some of the best beaches in the country. I have so many fond memories at each of them and look forward to making more in the future. The beach is the perfect place for playing soccer, laying out, or catching a few waves. If the Sun and Surf isn’t for you, come after dark and enjoy bonfires – nothing smells like Summer like the Ocean and S’Mores.
    La Jolla Cove
    The Beach

    SoCal Beach Champs

  4. Take a Road Trip – L.A. and Santa Barbara are only a few hours away via Car and are such fun places to visit for the day. Along the way be sure to stop at the Rainbow Factory to pick up a pair of sandals – it’ll be worth the visit! IMG_1004Rainbow Factory in SC
  5. Go to a Padres Game – Yes, they may be last in their conference and the league, but hey, a fan is a fan through thick and through thin. Petco Park is a fun stadium, there are no bad seats in the house and it’s downtown! After the game, hit up the Gaslamp district which is home to some pretty famous bars and restaurants.

If you’re ever in the SoCal ever be sure to stop by and say Hey! Hope you enjoy 🙂

Meg Moves to Manhattan

Gone were the dog days of summer, the hours spent on the beach and the times spent giggling late into the night with my best friends. I was playing a whole different ball game. The moment I stepped off that Boeing 747,  everything changed. Not only did I have to adjust to the new time change but I had to get used to living with a roommate, paying for things on my own, making new friends, and dealing with the humidity (ughh!).

About ten months ago,  I embarked on a journey that not only changed my coordinates on a map, but turned my life as I knew it upside down. I once again packed up my belongings in big cardboard boxes, neatly folded all of my clothes into my two large suitcases, and grabbed a one way ticket to New York City. I was diving head first into a world that I was unsure of. Yes, I had been to the Big Apple before, but I was completely lost on what to expect when I went to school and played soccer there. As I disembarked the plane, the butterflies of nervousness transformed into butterflies of excitement. I really had just moved to New York City.

Bags Packed and Ready to GoIt’s amazing what can happen in one year. 365 days. 12 months. 52 weeks. But it’s extraordinary how much can happen in less than that time. I would have never in a million years imagined that I would be in college playing two sports, majoring in Sports Management, and interning at a company I had admired for years. I didn’t even know these opportunities existed. New York City is truly the place where dreams come true.

Sitting in the warmth of my house, on the big comfy couches in the living room, it’s hard to imagine that this will be my last summer as a teenager here in San Diego. It’s time to live it up, but in the meantime this blog will serve as a record of my adventures in and out of the city that never sleeps. Moving to the city, going to school and playing soccer at NYU were probably the most monumental decisions I have ever made but I’m sure glad I went with my gut on this one. This year has been magical and I cannot wait to be “Meg in Manhattan” once again.
